Measuring Your Ring Size In Centimetres

Most ring size guides provide the ring diameter and circumference measurements in millimetres (mm), and 10mm equals 1cm. You can use a few simple but handy methods to find the correct ring size for your hand.

Method 1: Using A Photograph

If you plan on surprising your partner with a ring, try this cheeky surprise method to find your partner’s ring size without giving up the secret too early.

Take an overhead photo of your hand next to your partner’s ring finger. Make sure you know your partner’s preferred ring finger hand in advance!
Find your ring finger’s diameter using a ruler. Use it as a base when measuring your partner’s ring finger diameter from the photo.
Calculate the circumference of your partner’s finger using the diameter as your guide. To find the circumference, use the formula C=𝜋d, where d is the finger’s diameter.

Method 2: Using Another Ring You Own

If you or your partner own a ring, you can also use that as a helpful basis. Ring sizes can differ due to various factors, including the temperature, so it helps to choose an existing ring that does not give you or your partner any problems putting it on or removing it. You can then draw an outline of the inner circumference with the chosen ring and trace it on paper. From there, take a ruler or a ring sizer and measure the diameter and inner circumference.

Method 3: Using A String

A string or floss can also be used as a simple tool to measure your finger (or your partner’s), but be careful not to pull it too taut, or you may end up with an inaccurate measurement. You can also use paper instead if you have no string available.

Take a floss or string long enough to wrap it around the base of your finger. Avoid wrapping it around the upper part of your finger, as your ring will rest on the base.
Once you wrap the string around, use a pen to mark the spot where it overlaps.
Stretch the string on a flat surface, then use a ruler or measuring tape to find the length in cm.

Method 4: Using A Ring Sizer

You can also find a plethora of ring sizers online, each tailored to different international ring sizes. These online versions feature a printable measuring tape-like tool with notches to indicate different ring sizes; you can loop it around your finger and use the notches to find your ring size in a similar way you would use the string method (without needing to mark it, thanks to the notches).

How to Know the Correct Ring Fit

The right ring should sit snugly on your finger, not too tight or loose. A comfortable ring does not need to be loose; otherwise, it would just fall off your finger. It can still move around a little on your finger and over your knuckles without causing you discomfort. It would help to perform a repeat measurement to get as close as an accurate measurement for your ring size; it also helps to ensure you account for factors (such as the current temperature) that might change your finger’s size.

Some jewellers may also distinguish between types of bands. “Comfort fit” typically indicates that the inner part of the band is slightly curved, while “standard fit” features a flat inner band.
